Supercars 2020: Scott McLaughlin IndyCar debut, Team Penske, star requires travel exemption to race in St. Petersburg, Florida

Published

on

Scott McLaughlin appears set to make his IndyCar debut next month if he can secure a travel exemption from the Australian government.

Having completed a series of successful tests for Team Penske early in the year, McLaughlin’s initial 2020 IndyCar race plans were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

But with the Supercars season now confirmed to conclude at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 on October 18 – a week before the IndyCar season finale at St. Petersburg, Florida, that dream has been revived.

Daniel Ricciardo has admitted there is “pain” behind his typical trademark smile at the moment after an agonising finish to Sunday’s thrilling Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello saw his match his best-ever finish for Renault in P4.

But the Australian’s goal has always been to score the team’s first podium since their return to the sport in 2016 and with Renault changing its name to Alpine next season and Ricciardo off to McLaren, time is starting to run out.

He also has a cheeky little side bet with Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul, who will have to get a tattoo of Ricciardo’s choice if he finishes on the podium this season.

Ex-Ferrari chief Ross Brawn has delivered an emotional antidote to F1 legend Michael Schumacher’s on-track reputation as “a despicable, horrible character”.

The German’s win-at-all-cost attitude diminished the popularity of his reign from 1994 to 2004, including among fellow drivers, especially as he was accused of racing dangerously.

But Brawn, who was technical director during Schumacher’s stints at Ferrari and Benetton, claims the motorsport icon changed minds once people met him away from the wheel.

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown has lifted the lid on how he was able to snare Daniel Ricciardo just two years after being knocked back by the Aussie superstar.

Ricciardo made a big call when he decided to part ways from Red Bull and take up Renault’s big-money offer.

But they failed to deliver what he was after while McLaren were on the way up and Ricciardo did not want to take another risk.
