Melbourne’s Oscar Piastri has won the Formula 3 Championship after finishing seventh in a thrilling final race of the year.

The seventh place finish was enough for Piastri, 19, to edge Théo Pourchaire to the title as his nearest rival for the championship heading into the race, Logan Sargeant, crashed out.

Piastri and Prema teammate Sargeant were equal on points heading into the race and the latter was the favourite before the lights out as he lined up five places ahead of the Australian on the grid.

Daniel Ricciardo is a man of his word.

On Sunday at the Russian Grand Prix, he told his team he’d make up for a basic error that threatened his top-five finish.

Not only did he then put his foot down to hold onto fifth, but he did so with ease, more than ten seconds clear of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in sixth.

The result carried on a strong run of performances for the Australian who had finished fourth, sixth and fourth in the three previous races.

F1 2020, Russian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton penalty makes Mercedes driver furious, reaction

Lewis Hamilton accused the stewards at Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix of “trying to stop me” after he was handed two five-second penalties that wrecked his hopes of a record-equalling 91st victory.

The runaway series leader and six-time champion said the stewards’ penalties, given to him for a minor infringement when he performed two pre-race practice starts, were excessive.

“They’re trying to stop me, aren’t they? But, that’s ok. I just need to keep my head down and stay focussed and we’ll see what happens,” he said.
