In a show of solidarity, Holden teams and drivers have come together ahead of the Superloop Adelaide 500 to represent the brand in 2020.

On Monday, it was announced Holden will cease to exist by 2021, with General Motors opting to retire the iconic brand from Australia and New Zealand.

It marks a key period for Supercars, with the sport’s roots based on Holden’s longstanding rivalry with Ford.

F1 2020: Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris take pay cuts, coronavirus, environmental benefits

Published

on

F1 drivers are set to take pay cuts in the near future with the top paid drivers — Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel — to lead the way.

McLaren have already announced both its drivers Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris had volunteered to slash their wages, earning a reported $A4m and $A1.2m a year.

While it’s a fair chunk of change for the pair, it’s nowhere near the reported $A81.7 and $A71.5 million Hamilton and Vettel take home.

Hamilton is a six-time champion and Vettel a four-time championship winner but The Daily Mail has reported the talks are already under way to save cash for the teams as the substantial financial burden of the coronavirus crisis pinches even the biggest money sports.

Kelly Racing Supercars driver Andre Heimgartner will get the chance to take on Formula 1 aces and global stars in an F1 Eseries race.

Heimgartner, who will feature alongside his 24 championship rivals in the sport’s BP Supercars All Stars Eseries from next week, has been handpicked to join the virtual F1 grid.

This weekend’s race, which will be staged at Melbourne’s Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, is an effective replacement for what would have been the inaugural Vietnam Grand Prix. The Hanoi race is one of six races postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with Australia and Monaco cancelled.

Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin has praised the motorsport community in its response to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic which has forced a halt to the 2020 season.

McLaughlin opened his title defence with a win on the streets of Adelaide in February, but may not be able to resume his battle with his rivals on track until at least June with three events postponed.

In response to the layoff, Supercars has organised an online All Stars Eseries, which will feature all 25 championship drivers, with 18 tracks to host 10 events in 10 weeks.
