Sebastian Vettel may be lagging behind young Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc this season, but Daniel Ricciardo believes the four-time world champion is close to bouncing back.

Vettel returns to the scene of one of his most successful playgrounds in Formula 1 this weekend in Singapore, where he has won four times.

However, the 32-year-old is currently in a winless slump stretching longer than 12 months, while Leclerc has won the last two races in Belgium and Italy.

Petronas Yamaha SRT rookie Fabio Quartararo was the fast man in Friday practice for the Japanese Grand Prix.

The Frenchman was fastest in all sectors and slotted into pole favouritism at the Twin Ring Motegi with a 1:44.764s best.

Quartararo set the fastest time in FP2 to lead factory Yamaha’s Maverick Viñales by a whopping 0.3s, with world champion Marc Marquez third aboard his Repsol Honda.

The 2020 Supercars season is locked in for a 23-car grid, but the category has left the door open for additional entries.

Friday was the deadline day for the submission of Racing Entitlement Contracts (RECs) for the 2020 season, with 5pm AEDT the cut-off.

While a new two-car Sydney outfit and an expanded Team 18 effort will feature, the sport was rocked when Garry Rogers Motorsport confirmed its exit from Supercars after the current season, ending 24 unbroken years in the main game.

The Volvo mission remains a proud moment for Garry Rogers, who praised his team’s dedication to the project.

On Friday, it was announced that Garry Rogers Motorsport will leave Supercars at the end of the 2019 season. A mainstay on the grid since 1996, GRM competed in its 317th championship round in Bathurst last weekend.

Having run Commodores from day dot, Rogers struck a deal with Volvo in 2013, with the Swedish manufacturer’s performance arm Polestar also buying into the programme.
