Door open for ‘outstanding’ Fernando Alonso to join McLaren’s IndyCar venture

Published

The door is open for Fernando Alonso to join McLaren’s IndyCar venture in 2020, despite the Spaniard previously indicating little interest in joining the series full time.

Earlier this week, McLaren announced a partnership with Schmidt Peterson Racing for a full-time assault on IndyCar next season.

It encouraged rumours of a return for Alonso, who competed with McLaren in the 2017 Indianapolis 500 before failing to qualify for this year’s race.

F1 2020, Austrian Grand Prix, Styrian GP: Live qualifying, start time, practice, results, Daniel Ricciardo crash

F1 Styrian Grand Prix 2020 qualifying, Red Bull Ring, Spielberg (11pm EST) — Formula 1 drivers are braced for an unpredictable Austria follow-up after a surprising Friday “mix-up” for the Styrian GP – with Lewis Hamilton struggling – ahead of expected rain for qualifying.

The second race of Spielberg’s season-opening back-to-back has an epic act to follow after last weekend’s Austrian GP, but the results from the ‘Styria’ Practice One and Two hinted at a much closer pecking order.

In sweltering hot conditions, favourites Mercedes topped neither Friday session as Sergio Perez and then Max Verstappen set the pace – with Hamilton “not happy” with his W11 and finishing only sixth in P2.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner says the team have given a “definite no” to Sebastian Vettel over any chance of re-joining them for the 2021 F1 season.

Vettel is currently without a drive for next season and admitted on Thursday at the Styrian GP that “probably the answer would be yes” if Red Bull offered him the chance to rejoin the team he won his four world titles with.

However, despite speculation that Red Bull’s senior chiefs were exploring the possibility, Horner says the reunion will not be happening.
