West Ham completed the signing of promising Spanish international midfielder Pablo Fornals on Friday from Villarreal for a reported fee of £24 million (A$43 million).

“Fornals, who becomes the second most-expensive signing in the club’s history behind Felipe Anderson, has signed a five-year contract, with an option of a further year,” said West Ham in a statement.

The 23-year-old scored nine goals in 96 appearances for Villarreal, including a memorable late winner away to Real Madrid in January 2018, but is best known for his threat as a creator from midfield.

Round 38

“He is a player we have monitored closely for some time, having seen him make excellent progress as a young midfielder in one of the best leagues in the world,” said West Ham director of football Mario Husillos, who previously worked with Fornals at Malaga.

Football rules: Mino Raiola has ban overturned, Paul Pogba, Matthijs De Ligt transfer news

Published

on

Football agent Mino Raiola, whose high-profile clients include Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, had his worldwide ban lifted by FIFA, echoing the action of the Italian Football Association (FIGC) a day earlier, the global governing body announced on Friday.

Raiola, 51, was suspended by the FIGC last April with FIFA’s disciplinary committee originally extending the sanctions to an international level in May.

“The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee issued a procedural order today informing the intermediaries Carmine Raiola and Vincenzo Raiola that the worldwide extension of their suspensions had been annulled with immediate effect,” said a FIFA statement.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne on Wednesday paused the suspension on appeal, and it was overturned by the Federal Court of Appeal in Italy on Thursday.

Raiola and his cousin Vincenzo had been banned from transfer activity reportedly for their alleged poaching of former PSV Eindhoven youth player Gianluca Scamacca, now with Italian club Sassuolo, from his agents.

Raiola, who also represents LA Galaxy striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, said the initial sanctions in Italy were “based on false grounds and lies”.

The ban would have left the super agent unable to act for his clients in the current transfer window. But it’s now been overturned, and hat’s likely good news for the likes of Pogba, who is rumoured to be considering a stunning exit from United.

With his agent now able to represent him again, he could help broker a switch elsewhere, boosting the chances of a potential move.
