But the most impressive performance in Bahrain came from the engine that finished in fourth — and its driver wanted to make sure everyone was well aware.
Pierre Gasly thanked his Toro Rosso team and engine supplier Honda for their “unbelievable” job, and that “now we can fight.”
If those words sound familiar, that’s because they are the same ones uttered by the now Honda-less Fernando Alonso after he took his McLaren-Renault to fifth place in the Australian GP.
Gasly copped a fair bit of heat on social media from Spanish fans who noticed the correlation in the week between Bahrain and China.
“It was just a little joke — that is it,” Gasly said.
“I just I think we need to give credit back to Honda. In the end, they had a really tough three years with McLaren and to finish fourth in our second race with them was just amazing.
“It was a way to give back to them credit because they are working really hard. They need credit for the hard work they are doing.”
