Chelsea v Spurs, Dele Alli goals, Mauricio Pochettino, reaction: Spurs hero’s ‘deserved’ star turn after ‘tough period’

Published

on

TOTTENHAM Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino insisted he always trusted Dele Alli’s talent despite the England international’s struggles to meet his high standards this season.

Alli doubled his tally for 2018 by scoring twice in four second-half minutes as Spurs beat Chelsea 3-1 on Sunday to end a 28-year wait for a Premier League win at Stamford Bridge.

Defeat for the hosts all but ends Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League football next season as Spurs opened up an eight-point lead over their closest challengers for fourth place.

“I’m very, very pleased for Dele,” said Pochettino. “It’s been a tough period for him, but I like his talent, his character. I’m so happy for him because he deserved it.” Alli was left out of both England’s recent friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy with Gareth Southgate suggesting his place in the starting XI at the World Cup was far from secure.

Manchester United has only signed one player this transfer window, while top-four rivals like Chelsea have splashed the cash and even defending champions Liverpool have bagged a couple of star arrivals.

But there’s a key reason more players haven’t walked in through the doors at Old Trafford: the club can’t get rid of the ones it doesn’t want.

Even so, United are closing in on one extremely talented Brazilian arrival. But it’s bad news for West Ham, whose owner is ‘depressed’ over their transfer woes.

An already dramatic A-League transfer window has taken another turn, with fringe Socceroo Andrew Nabbout joining Melbourne City from Melbourne Victory.

It represents the second time in a week that a player who was set to join Perth Glory has backflipped on their decision due to difficulties with the move to Western Australia – largely due to state border restrictions and pay negotiation problems.

The first was Nathaniel Atkinson, the 21-year-old Melbourne City fullback deciding to remain at City and re-signing for a further two seasons.
