THE GRID: Where every car will start the Australian Grand Prix
RICCIARDO: ‘That was like Mercedes giving the finger to everyone’
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Bottas’ qualifying crash compounded by penalty
Daniel Ricciardo will start from eighth on the grid after wearing a three-place grid penalty for a practice infraction, while Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas will start 15th after a gearbox change penalty due to damage from his qualifying crash.
Also down the order are perennial fan favourites Williams, sophomore teen Lance Stroll their best in 13th while Sergey Sirotkin will start off the back row in 19th.
The latter makes his F1 debut after beating recovering former star Robert Kubica to the drive, the Pole instead serving as the team’s test and reserve driver.
Jacques Villeneuve, 1997 F1 champ turned TV pundit, has an … interesting analysis on how that situation could play out.
“It’s difficult to assess the situation at Williams. At least at the tests, the car looked difficult to drive,” he told Sky Italia.
“The only one who was able to use its potential was Kubica.
“Robert is the driver who will most develop the car, and it’s possible he will consciously make it difficult to drive for the other drivers.
“His dream is to race the car, not to be the third driver, and so I do not underestimate this point. In his situation I would do exactly the same.”
The race gets underway at 4:10pm AEDT.
