A-League: Coach Paul Okon walks out on Central Coast Mariners

Published

on

UPDATE: A FRUSTRATED Paul Okon walked out of the Mariners on Tuesday in the midst of talks to plan for next season.

The former Young Socceroos boss had met club officials at lunchtime to discuss the overhaul of his squad – and a new contract for himself – but instead resigned on the spot, with four rounds of the regular season remaining and three months left on his existing deal.

The move caught Mariners management by surprise, with youth team boss Wayne O’Sullivan hastily installed as caretaker after Okon’s assistant, Ivan Jolic, also quit.

Though it’s believed Okon had been mulling over his future at the club, the Mariners anticipated he would re-sign despite another hugely disappointing season with the club likely to finish even lower on the ladder than last season.

Round 24

But the Mariners have struck links with a club in Malta, selling Harry Ascroft there and thought to be discussing bringing players the other way, which would have diluted Okon’s control of the squad.

Gareth Bale has sealed his return to Spurs for the rest of the campaign — but could end up staying for longer.

Welsh superstar Bale was mobbed by fans when he arrived at Tottenham’s training ground on Friday to wrap up his season loan from Real Madrid.

The North London club have agreed to pay a percentage of his wages in a bargain deal which amounts to around £12 million ($A21m) for the season — and they will officially confirm it today.

That equates to around £230,000 per week ($A408,000) – less than half of his estimated £600,00-per-week ($A1,063,000) wages at Real Madrid.
