Simon Hill, Ali Abbas interview

Published

FOR most footballers, being without a contract at 31, on the back of a serious knee injury which doctors said would finish your playing days, and three seasons without much game time, would all be a signal to start looking for a post-game career.

But then, ex Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets player, Ali Abbas, isn’t your typical footballer.

A back story such as his means his current predicament, after being released from Wellington Phoenix in February, is just a minor setback.

Abbas, you will remember, first came to Australia in 2007 with the Iraq Under-23 team to play the Olyroos in Gosford. The Baghdad-born midfielder, by then already an Asian Cup winner in Iraq’s fairy tale success of the same year, decided to stay and seek political asylum, along with two teammates, Ali Mansour and Ali Khadher.
