Shaquem Griffin’s NFL Combine performance draws praise from JJ Watt, Von Miller, other players

Published

on

Shaquem Griffin‘s story has dominated this weekend’s NFL combine.

After not initially receiving an invitation to Indianapolis, the star linebacker from Central Florida has impressed in workouts. His official 4.38 in the 40-yard dash is the fastest time for a linebacker going back to 2006, the first year ESPN Stats & Information began documenting 40 times at the combine. And only two other 2018 draft prospects — wide receivers D.J. Chark (4.34) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (4.37) — have had faster times this week.

Griffin also finished with 20 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press, using a prosthetic on his left arm to attach to the bar on Saturday.

Both are notable marks as Griffin attempts to become the first player with one hand to be drafted in the league’s modern era, according to the NFL. Griffin had his left hand amputated when he was 4 years old because of amniotic band syndrome, a congenital condition.

Reactions have poured in from across the NFL, starting with Griffin’s twin brother, Shaquill, a cornerback with the Seahawks, and including some of the league’s biggest defensive stars, Hall of Famers and more:

New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley carried off, won’t come back

Published

on

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley was carried off the field by trainers after a run early in the first quarter. He left the game against the Chicago Bears with a right knee injury and was in serious pain.

The Giants said Barkley was undergoing X-rays on his knee. He will undergo more tests Monday, the team said.

Barkley was hurt as he ran toward the sideline and was being tackled by Chicago Bears safety Eddie Jackson. He grabbed at the knee as he was headed to the ground.

Barkley was later carted to the locker room and slammed his fist in disgust. He had four rushes for 28 yards before exiting.

This came moments after Barkley was forced to miss a play when he landed on his left arm.

The Bears had their own running back issues. David Montgomery tried to hurdle a lineman, was clipped and tackled with his head hitting the turf first. He went to the medical tent and then the locker room.

The Bears said he was questionable to return with a neck injury.

It has been a rough start to the season for Barkley and the Giants. The star running back rushed for 6 yards on 15 carries in the opener and was criticized publicly by former Giants great Tiki Barber for his blocking. Barkley was hit behind the line of scrimmage on 11 of the 15 carries, and had eight negative runs.

Barkley’s first run again went for negative yards on Sunday in Chicago and the Giants trailed 10-0 when he left the contest.

Barkley, 23, is in his third professional season after being selected with the second-overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. After a huge rookie season where he accumulated more than 2,000 total yards from scrimmage, he was hampered by a high ankle sprain last year.

The Giants were expected to build their offense this season around Barkley, the talented back who general manager Dave Gettleman considered a transcendent talent and future “gold jacket” player.

Raheem Mostert’s 80-yard TD helps Niners to fast start

Published

on

For the second week in a row, San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert offered some early-game fireworks, going 80 yards for a touchdown against the New York Jets.

Last week, Mostert had a 76-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on the Niners’ second offensive series against the Arizona Cardinals. On Sunday, Mostert didn’t wait nearly as long, as he burst off the right side of the offensive line on a simple toss play and raced 80 yards for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Mostert is the first player on any team with multiple 75-yard scrimmage touchdowns in his team’s first two games since Frank Gore in 2009.

In the process, Mostert reached a max speed of 23.09 miles per hour, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. That is the fastest speed by a ball carrier on a play from scrimmage over the past five seasons, topping the mark Mostert set last week when he hit 22.75 miles per hour on his touchdown catch.

On Friday, Mostert told ESPN he actually slowed down on the long touchdown catch, but he had his sights set on breaking that record.

“I’m gonna try to [beat that speed] at least but I’m not gonna be strenuous about it because I know my speed,” Mostert said. “And I know my abilities, so I’m not gonna put too much, you know, stuff on me. I just go out there and just play man.”

Mostert has now scored a touchdown in eight consecutive games, the most by a 49er since Terrell Owens did it in 1998.
