The 2021 Supercars Championship kicks off on Friday on the hallowed bitumen around Mount Panorama.

For the first time ever, Bathurst will open the season. And this weekend’s meet will be a single-driver sprint event, no less – the first in 25 years at the famous venue.

And while we’re back at the same course that hosted last season’s finale (the first time that back-to-back scenario has occured in 50 years!) one thing will look very different from 2020: Three-time reigning champion Scott McLaughlin won’t be around to defend his Supercars crown after moving to IndyCar.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Repco Mt Panorama 500.

F1 2020, Imola Grand Prix: Daniel Ricciardo made mistake leaving Red Bull, McLaren switch could work, Martin Brundle says

Published

Daniel Ricciardo made a “mistake” by leaving Red Bull, but has now found himself at the right destination in McLaren, F1 great Martin Brundle says.

Speaking to In the Fast Lane podcast, Brundle endorsed Ricciardo’s second team switch since 2018, when he shocked F1 by ending his long-term affiliation with Red Bull for mid-table Renault.

The new partnership, however, didn’t pan out and, with a drive at Mercedes and a return to Red Bull all but out of the equation for 2021, Brundle said Ricciardo made the right call in jumping ship while he could.

F1 news 2021, Daniel Ricciardo, McLaren, Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, Max Verstappen, Red Bull, Imola Grand Prix, latest

Daniel Ricciardo has aimed a subtle dig at seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, claimed he’s not had the “strongest competition” during his Mercedes dominance.

The 36-year-old won the 2021 curtain-raiser in Bahrain last month as he attempts to break Michael Schumacher’s world title record, which he equalled last year.

Hamilton has won six of the last seven world titles, with the only one he missed out on during the V6-hybrid era being to then Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

But Ricciardo admitted that there are a number of drivers that believe they could beat Hamilton and win races if they were in the other Mercedes, currently occupied by Valtteri Bottas.

F1 news 2021, Daniel Ricciardo, Bathurst, McLaren, IndyCar, Imola, Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, latest

Daniel Ricciardo has revealed his new association with McLaren means that he is likely to appear in IndyCar at some point – although driving a Supercar around Bathurst is his ultimate goal.

Ricciardo joined McLaren at the end of last year following to mediocre seasons with Renault and enjoyed a seventh-place finish in his debut in Bahrain last month.

He’ll get his next chance to improve on that at Imola this weekend as he looks to get back on the podium in what appears to be the best car he’s driven since leaving Red Bull.

But the new Mercedes-powered McLaren isn’t the only positive to joining his new team, with him now able to explore ties in other motorsport series.
