POWERBALL fever is taking over the United States, and not even millionaire athletes can resist entering for a chance at $US1.5 billion.
It’s the largest ever lottery prize for a single winner, and due to a surge in ticket sales, the figure could even rise higher.
But is it a bad look when wealthy sports stars take part?
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin makes about US$10 million a year on a US$124 million, 13-year contract, and he’s worth every penny too, with the Russian scoring his 500th NHL goal this week.
Despite his healthy salary though, Ovechkin was spotted in Virginia buying a Powerball ticket with his father.
“It was funny. Who’s going to take a picture of me? It’s crazy. People are crazy,” Ovechkin told ESPN.
“If I win, I’ll let you guys know.”
Ovechkin isn’t the only athlete tempted by the massive amount of cash though.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, who will make almost US$23 million this season alone, entered the Powerball draw for a chance at the world’s richest lottery.
“I don’t think I’m going to ever get hit by an asteroid, I don’t think I’m ever going to be president. I might have a better chance to win Powerball,” Anthony said earlier this week.
“I’m going to share it all.”
If they manage to beat the 1 in 292 million odds against them, Dallas Mavericks owner and billionaire Mark Cuban supplied some handy tips for the lucky winner on the Dallas Morning News.
— Hire a tax attorney first.
— Don’t take the lump sum. You don’t want to blow it all in one spot.
— If you weren’t happy yesterday you won’t be happy tomorrow. It’s money. It’s not happiness.
— If you were happy yesterday, you are going to be a lot happier tomorrow. It’s money. Life gets easier when you don’t have to worry about the bills.
— Tell all your friends and relatives no. They will ask. Tell them no. If you are close to them, you already know who needs help and what they need. Feel free to help SOME, but talk to your accountant before you do anything and remember this, no one needs 1m dollars for anything. No one needs 100k for anything. Anyone who asks is not your friend.
— You don’t become a smart investor when you win the lottery. Don’t make investments. You can put it in the bank and live comfortably. Forever. You will sleep a lot better knowing you won’t lose money.
