Manchester City is set to pry England star Jack Grealish away from Aston Villa with a massive £100 million (A$190m) bid.

The Telegraph reported on Friday that Pep Guardiola was ready to splash the cash on the 25-year-old who would become the most expensive buy ever by an English club.

The previous record was the £89m Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba in 2016.

Grealish was a key target for Manchester United before the 2020-21 season but a move never materialised for the Villa captain and fan favourite.

Before becoming a Premier League star, he would often show his support for United over Manchester City in tweets which have since been deleted.

Angry United fans, however, have since dug them up.

One reads: “On route to training, finally im back training n the suns shining, absolutely BUZZING for the game tonight, come on u reds #United.”

Another sent in 2012 read: “Please united win and city lose, I cannot watch city win the league lol.”

Nonetheless, Grealish could be in sky blue in a matter of weeks with it becoming increasingly unlikely that Villa will be able to hold onto the star player long term.

ARSENAL SWOOP FOR ‘£50 MILLION’ BRIGHTON DEFENDER WHITE

Arsenal have signed England defender Ben White from Premier League rivals Brighton, the London club announced on Friday.

The 23-year-old, a member of England’s Euro 2020 squad, has now completed a medical.

Although no fee, nor the exact length of a “long-term” deal has been disclosed, British media reports suggest White has moved to the capital for a fee of £50 million (A$95m).

“Ben was a top target for us and it’s great that we’ve completed his signing,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told the club’s website.

“Ben has been educated with two very good clubs, Brighton and Leeds, in recent seasons. He has benefited well from two very good coaching setups and has shown with both Brighton and on loan with Leeds what a strong talent he is.”

White played 36 games for Brighton last season.

“We are incredibly proud of him and what he has achieved and much credit must go to our Academy, who have played such an important role in developing Ben from a younger age,” said Brighton manager Graham Potter.

POGBA KEEPING HIS OPTIONS OPEN

Paul Pogba is reportedly refusing to sign a new Manchester United deal before the end of the transfer window despite saying he can see a long-term future at the club.

Sky Sports reports that Pogba has become more settled in Manchester in recent weeks following the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Nonetheless, he knows that the next contract he signs is crucial and could define the rest of his career.

The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his deal and is said to be in no rush to put pen to paper, which United want him to do before the window closes.

PSG remain interested in bringing the gun midfielder back to France for this season.

A move hasn’t been ruled out by Pogba who is keeping his options open.

The Matildas are through to the Tokyo Olympics semi final after a scarcely-believable extra time win over Great Britain.

But the story was inches away from being a sour one for Australia and its star goalkeeper Teagan Micah who played the game of her life.

In commentary, Brenton Speed said: “Parris went down, the referee had a good long look at it and felt like Australia had infringed…

“Unless VAR overrules this — there is nothing in that surely?”

Fellow commentator and W-League star Georgia Yeoman-Dale added: “This is when should say to the referee, ‘Come and check it out on video and make sure you saw what you saw.’

“On first replay it looks like Carpenter has barely touched Parris.”

The referee, however, didn’t check any replays herself and let the penalty stand after a VAR check.

Thankfully for the Matildas, Micah was in sensational form on the night having already made two massive saves in the first half.
